Olympics opening ceremony: South Korea TV sorry for using pizza to depict Italy and Chernobyl for Ukraine
The i says a South Korean broadcaster has apologised after it aired “inappropriate” pictures to represent countries during its coverage of the Tokyo Olympic Games opening ceremony.
MBC (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation) used a picture of pizza to depict Italy, and of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster for Ukraine. When the Romanian team entered the Olympic Stadium, MBC aired a photo of Count Dracula.
Raphael Rashid, a freelance journalist based in Seoul, posted screenshots of MBC’s coverage in a Twitter thread. He wrote: “When Haitian athletes entered the stadium, an on-screen explanation said ‘the political situation is fogged by the assassination of the president.’ When Syrian athletes entered, it said ‘rich underground resources; a civil war that has been going on for 10 years.’”
