Oasis’ Noel Gallagher joins supergroup led by Ringo Starr’s son
Oasis’s Noel Gallagher has joined Mantra Of the Cosmos, a supergroup led by Sir Ringo Starr’s son, as they drop a psychedelic new single.
The Oasis frontman and The Beatles legend’s son, drummer Zak Starkey, make up the band alongside Happy Monday’s vocalist Shaun Ryder, former Oasis guitarist Andy Bell and Happy Mondays’ Mark ‘Bez’ Berry on percussion.
The song, Domino Bones (Get Dangerous), marks the supergroup’s third single since 2023 after X (Wot You Saying) and Gorilla Guerilla which they debuted live at Glastonbury Festival.
‘Mantra Of The Cosmos is like Dylan, Dali and Ginsberg on a rocket ship to the moon to have it with the clangers,’ Gallagher said about the recently-formed supergroup.
Zak and Noel go way back after first crossing paths in 1995 when Zak was rehearsing with his then-band, Face. In 2004, he became Oasis’ third drummer until2008 just before the brotherly duo tore apart.
He appeared on the albums Don’t Believe The Truth and Dig Your Own Soul.
Zak shared his excitement about the release of Domino Bones.
He told PA: ‘It’s not every day that the greatest songwriter of my generation – not to mention Shaun, the greatest beat poet of our times – sends a tune to me and I was in a daze for a bit cos it’s not something you want to f*** up.
‘It came together great – everyone digs it. Noel loves Shaun. He texted me to say “Do you know what you’ve got? The British Bob Dylan” – and he’s not f****** about because now I’ve witnessed what Shaun does. Noel calls him the “king of lyrics”.’
Shaun and Zak met on Channel 4’s TFI Friday in 2015 but it was almost a decade later when they re-connected after Zak ‘cold-called him’ to join this supergroup.
‘I didn’t want to be about guitars, I wanted to be about his words. He immediately said yes. I asked if his mate (Bez) was going to be in it and he said ‘He doesn’t know yet – but he is’.”
In fact, the latest single is named after Bez’s first band.
And Mantra of the Cosmos will be returning to the stage imminently to perform their trio of songs in a place close to Zak’s heart, the Cavern Club (made famous by the Beatles).
And it might not be the only time we see Zak and Noel collaborating this year. In September there were rumours that Zak was being courted by the recently-reunited Gallagher brothers to join them on tour over the summer.
Noel and Liam buried their decades-long feud last year after shocking fans with a reunion announcement 15 years after they broke u ‘for good’.
In a statement at the time, the Britpop band – known for singles such as Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back In Anger – said: ‘The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.’
