North Rhine-Westphalia election 2025: Key insights into crucial battleground state

North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) will likely decide the German Federal Election 2025. It’s the most populous state in Germany, and due to holding the highest number of Bundestag seats, it makes it the most important battleground.

The party that wins NRW most often wins the German federal election. The state includes traditional industrial cities where parties such as the SPD and Green enjoy strong support. The rural areas often lean more conservative, voting for the CDU/CSU. In working-class and eastern NRW regions, there has been a significant rise in support for the AfD.

If the CDU secures NRW, Friedrich Merz’s chances of becoming Chancellor will massively increase. But if the SPD were able to hold on, current German Chancellor Olaf Scholz could retain power. How these parties do in NRW is also important as it often helps shape coalition negotiations.

    NRW voter trends 2025

The industrial heartland of Germany, NRW, helped put the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in power but convincing them to do so again, is an uphill battle.

Recent polling data suggests a serious decline in SPD support within the state.

    • Infratest dimap Poll: SPD at 18%, CDU at 34%, AfD at 15%.
    • Forsa Poll: SPD at 18%, CDU at 36%, AfD at 14%.

The polling figures show the SPD behind both the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in NRW.

The key battleground state has historically been an SPD stronghold but traditional voters have started to shift towards more right-leaning parties, due to disillusionment with the SPD.

The state of the economy, concerns over immigration and deindustrisation are key reasons for the SPD’s loss of support.

This most contested state in Germany is by far the most fascinating to watch, not only because of the power it holds in the overall election, but in understanding the issues and concerns of the German people.

It’s not clear if the SPD will retain support in the NRW in this German Federal Election, but it’s looking unlikely.
