Nintendo Switch 2 will launch with 3D Mario in late 2024 claims leaker

Nintendo has never gone wrong with a Mario launch game (Picture: Nintendo)

The rumours about Nintendo’s next console are coming thick and fast, with a usually reliable source discussing both software and hardware.

Before starting any Switch 2 rumour it’s important to emphasise that officially Nintendo has barely even acknowledged they’re making a new console, let alone said anything about what it’s called or what it does.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that Nintendo leaks are notoriously unreliable, seemingly because they change their mind often – and sometimes even in response to leaks.

That said, a previously reliable source claims that the new console’s launch title is a new 3D Super Mario title, while also confirming previous leaks about a LCD, rather than OLED, screen.

The Super Mario team hasn’t announced anything new since the release of Super Mario Odyssey in 2017. There were multiple rumours of them working on a Donkey Kong game but after missing DK’s 40th anniversary, due to the pandemic, nothing’s been heard about that for a while.

There’s no suggestion that the new title is literally Super Mario Odyssey 2, so it’s possible this is still that same Donkey Kong project, or some reworked version of it.

As for the screen, it not being OLED may be disappointing but it’s also perfectly understandable. If the Switch 2 is more powerful, than Nintendo will be keen to keep the cost of the console as low as possible and a cheaper screen is one obvious way to do that.

The new screen is apparently bigger though, at 8 inches compared to the 7 inches of the OLED Model and the 6.2 inches of the standard and Lite models; so that at least is an improvement. It also leaves the door open to release a new OLED model further down the line.

Although this seems to confirm that the Switch 2 will have roughly the same form factor as the current console that’s not something that leaker Nate the Hate really got into in his recent podcast.

He did, however, state that the Switch 2 will see a considerable increase in internal stage, from the meagre 32GB of the current Switch. He wouldn’t commit to a number though, only that it could be anything up to 512GB.

Nate the Hate has proven accurate about Nintendo in the past, as well as other things like the unexpected Chrono Cross remaster, so there’s every chance this is accurate too – especially as none of the claims are outlandish.

In fact, he agrees with recent suggestions that the new console will launch in late 2024, not spring, with production beginning early next year.

He doesn’t claim to know when the new console will be announced though, which his the only point at which we’ll find out exactly what is going on.
