2024 Africa Cup of Nations – Afcon final: Nigeria to face Ivory Coast in final after dramatic penalty shootout
Nigeria booked their place in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a 4-2 shootout win over South Africa.
The match ended 1-1 after a remarkable end to normal time which saw a disallowed Nigerian goal (which if it had stood would have put Nigeria up 2-0) and instead awarding a penalty to South Africa.
Teboho Mokoena converted from the spot in the 90th minute to send the game into a goalless period of extra time where Bafana Bafana defender Grant Kekana was sent off late on.
Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali proved to be the hero after saving two penalties, helping the Super Eagles reach Sunday’s final – where they’ll face Ivory Coast after the hosts beat DR Congo.
Sebastien Haller is Ivory Coast’s hero today as his single goal (in the 65th minute) was the winning strike to send the host nation to Sunday’s final.
