Nurses accused of rape and child abuse free to practise as ‘toxic’ watchdog turned blind eye, review finds
An explosive review of the nursing watchdog has found a toxic and dysfunctional culture at “every level” and an organisation that turned a blind eye to serious sexual, physical and racist abuse.
Shocking failures within the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) include a seven-year delay in striking off a nurse who was accused of raping a colleague and sexually assaulting a patient.
In another finding, the NMC – which regulates more than 800,000 staff – took no action despite knowing that nurses and midwives had been accused of accessing category A images of child sexual abuse.
Kyiv mourns 43 dead in mass strikes by Putin’s forces ahead of key Nato summit
Ukraine is observing a day of mourning after dozens of missiles fired by Russia struck a number of cities across the country, killing at least 43 people and wounding more than 190. Officials have prohibited entertainment events and lowered the flags.
One of the 38 missiles fired by Vladimir Putin’s forces hit the Okhmatdyt hospital, which was treating children in the oncology department among others in the deadliest attack the war-hit nation has seen in months.
More than 100 buildings were damaged, including the children’s hospital and a maternity centre in Kyiv, children’s nurseries and a business centre and homes, president Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Tuesday’s front pages continue its coverage of UK politics as the new Labour government begin setting out their plans for the country. Much of the coverage is around defence spending following a Russian attack on a Ukrainian hospital.
The right-leaning newspapers claim the new chancellor – Rachel Reeves – is laying the groundwork for tax hikes following her first speech as Chancellor in which she said Labour had inherited the worst economy since WW2. The publications argue the economy the Tories inherited from the last Labour government – in 2010 – was far worse than today’s situation.
Elsewhere, England’s upcoming Euros semi-finals make several tabloid front pages – and not surprisingly, dominates the back pages.
