    Coronavirus updates: Cases top 1.3 million globally 

    CNN says the coronavirus has now infected more than 1.34 million people and killed over 74,000 worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University. 

    In the US the death toll has passed 10,000, and now currently has over 368,000 confirmed cases. US Officials warn this will be the toughest week yet in the pandemic.

    Japan state of emergency to cover Tokyo, Osaka and five other prefectures

    Japan Times says after pressure from public health officials and lawmakers, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Monday the government would declare a state of emergency as soon as Tuesday covering Tokyo, Osaka and five other prefectures amid the growing outbreak of Covid-19, in a step that will empower prefectures to take restrictive measures. 

    The PM is set to designate authorities in the seven prefectures subject to emergency measures. The declaration also will cover Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Hyogo and Fukuoka prefectures, Abe said in a briefing.

    NZ health minister breaks lockdown at the beach

    BBC News says New Zealand’s health minister has called himself an “idiot” after breaking the country’s lockdown by driving his family to the beach. 

    David Clark drove the 12-mile trip and was in “a clear breach of the lockdown principles.”

    He offered his resignation to Prime Minister Jacinda Arden but kept his job because of the ongoing crisis.

    PM Boris Johnson is in intensive care

    WTX News reports Downing Street has confirmed that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been moved into intensive care as his symptoms have worsened after being admitted for COVID-19.

    Prime minister Boris Johnson was admitted to St Thomas’ Hospital in London on Sunday night – 10 days after testing positive for coronavirus – after continuing to display symptoms of COVID-19.

    According to a spokesperson from Downing Street “Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital.”

    ‘There may be retaliation’: Trump says India may face US wrath if PM Modi fails to overturn export ban on Covid-19 treatment

    RT News says President Trump has warned that Washington may retaliate against New Dehli over a decision to bar exports of an experimental treatment for Covid-19, not long after asking his Indian counterpart to reverse the move. 

    On Saturday, India imposed a blanket ban on the export of hydroxychloroquine – an antimalarial drug under clinical trial as a treatment for the coronavirus.

    Turkish military restrains troop movement

    Arab News says as part of measures to stop the spread of Covis-19 the Turkish Defense Ministry announced on Sunday that it would decrease troop movement in Syria. 

    As Turkey’s death toll from Covid-19 rose to 574 over the weekend, the entry and exit of Turkish troops and staff into operation zones in Syria will now be subject to permission from the head of the army. All Turkish borders with neighbouring states have been closed.
