Newcastle have long-held interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, claims agent

Newcastle United are interested in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, keen on a summer move, although he still has four years to run on his Anfield contract.

Gomez moved to Liverpool way back in 2015 and has only been a first team regular in first and starts, partly due to injury and partly to competition for places.

The 25-year-old has made 19 Premier League appearances this season, 13 of which have come in the starting line-up, while he has turned out 10 more times in cup competitions.

There is plenty of competition at centre-back with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip in the squad and the Reds have been linked with reinforcing again in the position this summer after a poor season so far.

If Liverpool are willing to let Gomez go then the Magpies are interested in snapping him up, with agent Haydn Dodge confirming that Newcastle have been tracking him for some time.

Speaking to Caught Offside, Dodge of Next Generation Management said: ‘It is quite well known that Newcastle United have long admired defender Joe Gomez as they look to bolster their centre-half options ahead of several players being out of contract this summer.’

Gomez is still under contract at Anfield until 2027 so won’t be available cheaply, but luckily for Newcastle they have a lot of money in the bank.

However, Eddie Howe has insisted that the Magpies won’t be spending quite as much as some may expect of them this summer, wary of any financial fair play implications.

‘I’ve always said that Financial Fair Play is real for us,’ Howe said last month. ‘I’m not there doing the figures and the numbers and I don’t quite understand how it fully works. I’m obviously led by the people above me at the club to say what we can and can’t do.

‘But certainly it’s been there and I think it will continue to be there for us unless we can dramatically change our revenue streams.’
