Newcastle 1-2 AC Milan: It all ends in heartbreak for Toons
It all ended in heartbreak for Newcastle United with the final match of their Champions League journey ending 2-1, despite an incredible first half. It was an emotional and dramatic night at St James’ Park, with the first half being dominated by the home side, and AC Milan struggling to put together three passes. But in a shocking second half, Milan mounted a comeback and was able to create two moments of magic to secure the win.
Joelinton’s 33rd-minute strike put Newcastle in front and in the other match – Borussia Dortmund led against Paris St-Germain in Germany, there was hope for Newcastle to advance to the knockout stages based on head-to-head results.
But at the hour mark, both PSG and Milan scored bringing both games level. But Newcastle’s fate was sealed six minutes before the final whistle when Milan capitalised on a counter-attack. Substitute Samuel Chukwueze brilliantly curled a shot past Martin Dubravka, leaving manager Eddie Howe and his players devastated.
The fiercely contested Champions League journey concluded with Newcastle finishing at the bottom of Group F, denying them even the consolation of a spot in the Europa League.
