Rarely does a TV series get such rave reviews that it is compared to the works of Hollywood directors but the BBC’s brand new show has blown away viewers.

Boat Story is a dark comedy and thriller in which two strangers find a hoard of drugs washed up in a boat while out walking their dogs.

The show has been an instant hit with viewers, receiving rave reviews after the first episode aired on BBC 1 on Sunday night, with the whole series landing in full on iPlayer.

Some fans binge-watched the show, comparing it to the work of director Quentin Tarantino and other silver screen heavyweights.

The series comes from Harry and Jack Williams, the brothers behind The Missing and its spin-off Baptiste as well as hit drama The Tourist.

One viewer wrote on X (formerly Twitter): ‘BoatStory is the best drama BBC have made since well, forever. I’ve just finished the series on iPlayer and I’m floored.

‘So unique, clever, dramatic, brutal, devastating, hilarious and so full of wit and original concepts. It’s a rare diamond and it must win all the things.’

Another shared: ‘Well the first episode of #BoatStory is about as good a first episode as I’ve ever seen. We really are living in the golden age of telly.’

‘I enjoyed #BoatStory but man alive it was maybe the most violent thing I’ve ever seen on BBC1,’ voiced someone else.

Comments of ‘Ritchie-esque’ and that the show was giving ‘Wes Anderson’ vibes flooded social media.

Many praised Daisy Haggard, who plays protagonist Janet, as one viewer said: ‘BoatStory is fantastic can’t wait for tonight episode @daisy_haggard is fantastic and I love that @craigfairbrass is in it as well go watch if u dare.’

Daisy herself teased: ‘If you like your drama’s thrilling, stressful, bold, imaginative, surprising, bloody, playful, and very funny…’

‘Proud to be part of this brilliant world💜,’ the star added.

Boat Story airs on BBC 1 at 9pm on Sunday and Monday nights or stream the whole series on iPlayer now.
