New French PM will be appointed within days
Emmanuel Macron will name a new French prime minister “in the coming days” after a no-confidence vote in parliament ousted Michel Barnier.
French President Macron addressed the nation yesterday, rejecting pressure to step down, and vowing to stay in the role “fully, until the end of the mandate” in 2027.
Macron thanked Barnier for his dedication during his short term as prime minister and accused the French far right and hard left of teaming up to form an “anti-Republican front” to bring down the Barnier government.
On Wednesday, French MPs overwhelmingly voted to oust Barnier, just three months after Macron appointed him. A total of 331 MPs voted in support of the motion against Barnier, far more than the 288 required for it to pass.
The no-confidence vote was tabled by both the New Popular Front (left-wing alliance) and RN (far-right party).
The vote was tabled after Barnier used special powers to force through a Budget without MPs being able to vote on it.
Since Barnier’s resignation, the budget was automatically withdrawn. He will remain in government until Macron appoints a new government.
