    New Covid-19 tests give results in 90 mins

    BBC News says new 90-minute tests that can detect coronavirus and flu will be rolled out in care homes and laboratories from next week.

    The “on-the-spot” swab and DNA tests will help distinguish between Covid-19 and other seasonal illnesses, the government said. The health secretary said this would be “hugely beneficial” over the winter.

    Major incident declared in Manchester after rise in Covid-19 transmission

    The Guardian says a major incident has been declared in Greater Manchester in response to increases in coronavirus infection rates across “multiple localities”.

    The decision to up the readiness of emergency and public services to react to the escalating Covid-19 transmission rate in the region comes after the government announced new lockdown restrictions for parts of north-west England on Thursday.

    Gambia government ravaged by Covid-19 

    France24 says three ministers in Gambia’s government have tested positive for the coronavirus, officials said, days after the West African nation’s president went into self-isolation.

    President Adama Barrow said last week he would self-isolate for two weeks after Vice President Isatou Touray tested positive.

    Finance Minister Mambureh Njie, Petroleum and Energy Minister Fafa Sanyang and Agriculture Minister Amie Fabureh “have tested positive” for the virus, the presidency said in a tweet on Sunday.

    Coronavirus cases worldwide pass 18 million 

    Arab News says the number of coronavirus cases recorded worldwide has passed 18 million, according to an AFP tally.

    At least 18,011,763 cases have now been registered as the pandemic’s rate of infection continues to accelerate. A million more cases have been detected in just the last four days.

    More than half of the world’s cases have been recorded in the United States and in Latin America and the Caribbean region.

    In rare talks, Iran and UAE foreign ministers discuss Covid-19

    Aljazeera says the foreign ministers of longstanding regional foes Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have held rare talks on several bilateral and regional issues, including the outbreak of coronavirus in the Middle East.

    In a video call on Sunday during which they also exchanged greetings for the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan told his Iranian counterpart that strengthening bilateral cooperation was important in tackling COVID-19, according to WAM, the Emirati, state news agency.

    Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan leaves hospital after recovering from coronavirus

    Sky News says Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan has left hospital after recovering from coronavirus.

    The 77-year-old had been treated in a Mumbai hospital for three weeks, but has now tested negative and will rest at home. His actor son, Abhishek Bachchan, is still in Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital with the virus.
