Netherlands 2-0 South Africa: Dutch book quarter-final spot
The Netherlands secures a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a tense battle against South Africa.
Jill Roord, Manchester City’s newest record signing, scored a crucial goal in the ninth minute to give the Dutch the lead. Despite their advantage, South Africa came close to equalising on multiple occasions, with Banyana Banyana captain Thembi Kgatlana causing trouble and forcing four impressive saves from Daphne van Domselaar, Aston Villa’s goalkeeper, at Sydney Football Stadium.
In the second half, the Netherlands extended their lead when Lineth Beerensteyn capitalised on a mistake by South Africa’s goalkeeper, Kaylin Swart.
The Netherlands – 2019 runners-up – have now secured their spot in the next round where they will take on Spain in Wellington next Friday at 02:00 BST.
Unfortunately, they will have to do so without midfielder Danielle van de Donk, who received a second yellow card and will be suspended for the crucial encounter.
South Africa can leave the competition with their heads high. They have been an absolute joy to watch play, with their exciting fast-paced attacking play having entertained us all.
This game saw them go toe-to-toe with the Dutch despite losing Jermaine Seoposenwe and Bambanani Mbane to injury before half-time.
South Africa hope to host the next Women’s World Cup and after their incredible run in the 2023 edition, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better bidder.
