England reach Euro 2024 final as Ollie Watkins stuns Netherlands
England booked their place in the final of Euro 2024 against Spain with a dramatic late winner from Ollie Watkins helping the Three Lions past the Netherlands 2-1.
In what proved to be a back-and-forth opening 45 minutes, Xavi Simons opened the scoring for the Netherlands on seven minutes, with his long-range effort beating Jordan Pickford in the England net.
A controversial penalty just over 10 minutes later saw England handed a route back into the contest, with skipper Harry Kane stepping up from the spot to equalise for Gareth Southgate’s side. The penalty was the softest of penalties, with Kane actually kicking Denzel Dumfries, only for VAR to award the spot-kick in England’s favour.
John Hunt gets ITV tribute during England game after BBC star’s wife and daughters killed
ITV’s Mark Pougatch penned an emotional homage to BBC’s horse racing commentator John Hunt and then paid tribute to him during England’s Euro 2024 semi-final clash.
While gearing up for the match against the Netherlands in Dortmund on Wednesday evening, Pougatch made his feelings clear. Hunt’s wife and two daughters were the victims of a brutal crossbow attack, which led to a frenzied police search across north London for their killer on Wednesday (July 10).
Hunt, a beloved figure in the world of horse racing commentary for the BBC, has received an outpouring of support from the sports community on this dark day. Prior to taking to the airwaves, Pougatch shared on Twitter: “There is football tonight but much more importantly there is John Hunt and family to keep in your thoughts and hearts and prayers.”
