Everyone loves a Christmas movie, but the one at the top of a recent best and worst rated list might surprise you.

Netflix animated adventure comedy Klaus, released in 2019, topped the list, which may surprise some people. The flick tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a selfish postman and a reclusive toymaker at Christmas.

Popularity was measured by a unique index score, generated by reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, Metacritic and Letterboxd.

Klaus came out with an overall index of six.

J.K. Simmons voices Klaus in the flick, while Jason Schwartzman voices Jesper. The film also stars Rashida Jones, Will Sasso, Joan Cusack and more.

It seems like social media users agree with the list, with X user @neostr0mo writing: ‘Klaus (2019) is such an underrated Christmas movie, the animation is absolutely stunning! Beautiful soundtrack and a heartwarming plot, never fails to make me cry.’

If you watch just one new Christmas movie this season, make it Klaus.

The movie gets overlooked for being a Netflix original but it’s truly an entertaining movie with beautiful themes, artistry and music.

Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey took the second spot on the list, while The Christmas Chronicles came in third place.

Christmas classic The Holiday – starring Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Jack Black – was in at No. 4, while Alien Xmas and Let It Snow came in joint fifth place.

In terms of the worst-rated festive films of 2023, Best. Christmas. Ever! – starring actors including Jason Biggs, Brandy and Heather Graham – came at the top of the naughty list.

Holiday Rush came in second place, followed by The Holiday Calendar, Christmas with the Coopers, Christmas Inheritance, Family Switch and Falling for Christmas, which were also seen as festive flops, according to the list.

Industry experts insisted the festive period has been a huge hit for Netflix in general.

A spokesperson for industry data platform Alt Index said: ‘This year, more than ever, people are seeking the warmth and joy that Christmas films bring.

‘From classic tales to winter holiday romances, Netflix has certainly become a go-to service for those looking to indulge in their favourite festive flicks ahead of December 25th.

‘The magic of heartwarming stories, twinkling lights, and seasonal cheer has certainly captivated audiences, leading to a significant spike in website traffic, with a 1.9 per cent increase in October.’

‘With an estimated 1,428,134,000 visitors to http://Netflix.com in October, the streaming service also saw a 4.9 per cent surge in September – proving that audiences are keen to explore the website’s extensive catalogue in order to create memorable Christmas moments,’ they added.

‘The holiday magic isn’t just on the website, with Netflix’s app downloads also spiking in recent months. As the festive season approached, app usage increased by 1.5 per cent in November, with an estimated 222,720 daily downloads.

‘Meanwhile, Google Trends also showed a clear uptick in searches related to Netflix, indicating a growing anticipation and eagerness to discover the website’s latest festive releases. According to stats from Alt Index, the streaming giant has seen a staggering 33.9% increase in Google Trend searches over the last three months.’
