A film starring Saoirse Ronan praised as ‘powerful and inspiring’ is now streaming on Netflix.
Released last year, The Outrun was based on the 2016 memoir of the same name by Amy Liptrot.
It follows Rona, a young woman who has recently left rehab after checking in for alcoholism issues and returns home to the Orkney Islands in Scotland.
The film charts her challenges with addiction in a series of flashbacks, showing her attempts to balance her work as a biology graduate in London and living with her boyfriend Daynin (Paapa Essiedu), who eventually leaves her.
While in Scotland she then takes a job with an environmental agency on a remote island while attempting to heal.
In its review Entertainment Weekly wrote: ‘Ronan, cast against the backdrop of the sublime, evocative Orkney Island landscapes, elevates the film to a moving tale of overcoming one’s demons and learning to savour life as it comes.’
‘An inspired surprise: a portrait of addiction and recovery both visceral and lyrical, reflective and electric,’ The Financial Times said.
‘There have been plenty of addiction dramas over the years, so it takes a lot for one to stand out in this crowded space. But Ronan and Fingscheidt manage to find an original and remarkably beautiful way to approach this extremely difficult subject matter,’ Collider added.
Meanwhile viewers called it ‘thought-provoking’, ‘raw and intimate’ and ‘profound’.
Today the film was released on Netflix, with fans excited about the news.
‘Saoirse Ronan’s incredible performance (but then again, they all are) in THE OUTRUN is now on @NetflixUK,’ the Netflix UK and Ireland account posted on X.
‘Everyone must watch!!! An incredible film and performance,’ Jess commented.
‘This beautiful film has stayed with me since the moment I saw it. Saoirse is spellbinding, she must never be stopped,’ Hope shared.
‘EVERYONE GO WATCH THIS NOW,’ Philip added.
In an interview with Vogue last year, Saoirse spoke about tackling the dark themes.
‘It was all about honouring the messiness of this woman’s life but also grounding it in empathy. Having seen people I love be so affected by this particular illness, it was very important to me personally to give this woman’s story the space to be seen in its truest light,’ she said.
