Neil Diamond blasted for ‘creepy and uncomfortable’ resurfaced video
A clip of Neil Diamond kissing a fan at a 2002 concert has resurfaced, leaving fans well and truly creeped out.
The Sweet Caroline hitmaker, 84, was performing his song Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon, when he got a fan to join him by the stage.
What unfolded is what TikTok users commenting on the video are calling the ‘most uncomfortable 20 seconds’ of their lives, as Neil caressed the fan’s face and hands, and kissed her passionately between lines while kneeling on the stage.
As the song came to a close, fans noted how it ‘didn’t look like she was super into him kissing him in the end’ and called it an uncomfortable watch.
‘It is the arrogance that he believes every woman in the audience fancies him,’ fumed an unnamed user.
‘I really like Neil Diamond but this is pretty creepy,’ added Alaskan Leo, while former fan seanannakins said: ‘Literally have just gone right off Neil Diamond.’
‘As if the lyrics weren’t weird enough, now we’re blessed with this,’ said Lee, while Big G said: ‘That is possibly the most uncomfortable 20 seconds of my life.’
The lyrics to the song, further popularised by an outing on Pulp Fiction, go: ‘Please, come take my hand / Girl, you’ll be a woman soon / Soon, you’ll need a man.’
In a concert review of the Ice Palace concert in 2002, the Tampa Bay Times wrote that the performance ‘found Diamond lip-locked with one young blonde who approached the stage.’
It continued: ‘Those tender kisses turned into a make-out session so steamy, afterward Diamond asked the crowd for a cigarette.’
In an almost identical situation in 2011, Diamond also crouched down again to kiss a female fan in a performance of the same song.
The Daily Mail reported at the time that after kissing her twice, he fell back on stage and asked: ‘Am I in heaven?’
He was also reported to have said: ‘You kiss very good, wow are all the girls in this area like you?’
After she confirmed she was from London, Diamond was then reported to have said: ‘ ‘I’ll be in London in a matter of days.’
In 2018, Diamond revealed he’d been diagnosed with Parkinson’s – a degenerative neurological disorder that affects the body’s motor system, often causing shaking and movement difficulty.
At the time, he was forced to cancel shows in Australia and New Zealand on doctor’s orders while part-way through his 50th-anniversary tour.
In a statement released on his website he thanked his ‘loyal and devoted’ fans for their support.
