    Tighter national rules considered by the government to curb Covid-19 cases

    BBC News says new England-wide measures which could see hospitality businesses shut are being considered by the government to try to slow a second-wave of Covid-19 cases. 

    A short period of national rules – a “circuit break” of a few weeks – could be announced in the next week, BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said.

    Schools and most workplaces would be kept open if the circuit break is announced. But no final decision has been reached.

    Hundreds of Israelis protest new Covid-19 lockdown 

    France24 says hundreds of Israelis protested in Tel Aviv against a second nationwide lockdown, the first such move in the worked to tackle a surge in coronavirus cases. 

    The country is to go back into a lockdown at 2:00 pm on Friday – hours before Jewish New Year – and extend for three weeks over other religious holidays. The Jewish state has the world’s second-highest detected virus infection rate after Bahrain, according to an AFP tally.

    G20 ministers call for equal Covid-19 vaccine access

    Arab News says ensuring “equitable and affordable” access to vaccines for all was the key to overcoming the coronavirus pandemic and supporting global economic recovery, G20 finance and health ministers said in a joint statement. 

    The statement said an action plan would be presented at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governor’s meeting in October and at the leaders’ summit in November in Saudi Arabia’s capital of Riyadh.

    India logs another daily jump of more than 96,000 new Covid-19 cases

    Aljazeera says India’s coronavirus cases jumped by another 96,424 infections in the past 24 hours, showing little sign of slowing down. 

    The Health Ministry raised the nation’s total past 5.21 million, 0.37 per cent of its nearly 1.4 billion people. It said 1,174 more people died in the past 24 hours, for a total of 84,372 deaths.

    Global coronavirus cases pass 30 million 

    CNN says at least 30,003,378 cases of Covid-19 have now been recorded globally, according to Johns Hopkins University’s tally of cases. 

    The bleak milestone comes nine months after the initial cases were first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in mid-December, before continuing to spread across the globe.

    WHO outlines ways governments, health care leaders can keep health care workers safe 

    Fox News says the World Health Organization (WHO) outlined five steps to help governments and health care leaders better protect health workers from violence, physical and biological hazards and improve their mental health amid the coronavirus pandemic. 

    WHO is also calling for governments to advance national programs for health worker safety, and to connect health worker safety policies to existing patient safety policies.
