Narendra Modi sworn in for third term at grand ceremony in Delhi
Narendra Modi has been sworn in for a third term as India’s prime minister in a grand ceremony at Delhi’s presidential palace. His BJP-led alliance won the general election with 293 seats, while the opposition secured 234 seats.
Thousands attended Modi’s inauguration at Delhi’s presidential palace, including leaders from Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, but not Pakistan or China.
At 73, Modi became only the second Indian leader to win a third consecutive term, following Jawaharlal Nehru. Despite exit polls predicting an outright victory for the BJP, the party lost its parliamentary majority and relied on key allies, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal (United) JD(U), to reach the 272-seat mark needed to form the government.
