Hage Geingob: Namibia’s president dies aged 82
Namibia’s President Hage Geingob has passed away while undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek. The announcement was made by Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba, who revealed that Geingob died in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Vice-President Mbumba said, “At his side was his dear wife Madame Monica Geingos and his children”. The 82-year-old leader had publicly disclosed his battle with cancer just last month, a diagnosis that had prompted his travel to the United States for treatment. It was anticipated that he would return to Namibia on February 2nd.
President Geingob, who assumed office in 2015, was in the midst of his second and final term. Having undergone an aortic operation the previous year, he had also overcome prostate cancer in 2014.
As Namibia mourns the loss of its leader, it is preparing for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for November.
