An elderly mother has taken drastic legal action to remove her own sons from her house after they refused to move out.

The 75-year-old woman said she had grown tired of maintaining the pair, aged 40 and 42, who were still living in the family home in Italy and did not contribute to expenses or chores.

Both men have a job and the mum, from the north Italian city of Pavia, said she had tried to convince them to move on with their lives independently given their age.

‘But neither of them wanted to know,’ she said, according to local news outlet La Provincia Pavese.

She was frustrated that her sons did not offer any financial or day-to-day help and decided her only option was to pursue them in court.

When the case was heard by judge Simona Caterbi in Pavia, around 30 miles south of Milan, she agreed with the homeowner and issued an eviction order against the two men.

Judge Caterbi ruled that the men were initially within their rights to live at home due to the ‘obligation of the parent to provide maintenance’.

But she concluded that it was no longer justifiable because they are now aged over 40.

They now have until December 18 this year to vacate the property, The Guardian reports.

Families living under one roof long into adult life isn’t uncommon in Italy with almost 70% of people aged between 18 and 34 still living with their parents, according to 2022 data by statista.com.

The number of young adults opting to continue living in the family home has increased in recent years due to a challenging economic climate and the amount of time it takes to pin down a stable job.

Many are given the derogatory label of being a bamboccioni, which means big babies.

The phrase was first coined by an Italian politician in 2007 to poke fun at adults who still live with their parents, suggesting that many do so just to get a free pass.

In 2020, a 35-year-old part-time musician was essentially told to ‘grow up’ by judges after pursuing his father for financial support over a five-year period.

The court ruled against him and put an end to the case that had gripped the nation at the time.
