Mullanpur to host the final of Women’s World Cup 2025
The Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur has been confirmed to host the Women’s ODI World Cup final later this year.
WTX Sports has learnt that the tournament is likely to be held between September 29 and October 26. The eight-team tournament, hosted by India, will see matches being played in Vishakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, Raipur and Indore apart from Mullanpur, a village in the outskirts of Chandigarh that houses the open-air stadium.
None of Mullanpur, Thiruvananthapuram or Raipur have hosted a women’s international match yet. The Nehru Stadium in Indore hosted two women’s ODIs, including one in the 1997 World Cup. But the Holkar Stadium is likely to host the World Cup games in Indore this time.
Only the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vishakhapatnam has hosted six women’s T20Is and five women’s ODIs, the last of which was in 2014.
Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka, apart from hosts India, have already qualified for the competition. The last two teams will be decided in the Women’s World Cup Qualifiers that will be played in Lahore from April 9.
If Pakistan qualify, the World Cup will be held in a hybrid model, with the UAE and Sri Lanka the frontrunners to host matches featuring Pakistan because of the reciprocal arrangement arrived at by the BCCI and PCB before the men’s Champions Trophy 2025.
This will be the fifth time India will be hosting the Women’s ODI World Cup, the first time since 2013. The last time India hosted a women’s tournament was the T20 World Cup in 2016.
In both those competitions, India crashed out in the group stage. The format for the 2025 edition will be same as the 2022 one – eight teams playing a total of 31 games.
India finished runners-up in the 2017 World Cup, and narrowly missed out of the semi-final in 2022. This will be the first ODI World Cup for India after the retirements of Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami.
