Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) made a brief return to Coronation Street tonight (December 25) after being arrested a few weeks ago.
Bernie is facing time behind bars because she was caught handling stolen goods. At first, Bernie was confident and didn’t think she’d face a big punishment, but was then told she needed to spend at least half of her prison sentence locked up.
The development left her family, but Paul (Peter Ash) in particular, completely devastated.
Paul has MND and was recently told he only has around 6-12 months left to live, so was understandably broken at the thought of Bernie being released after his death.

The troubles and upsetting situations were put on the backburner in tonight’s Christmas Day episode of Coronation Street, as the Weatherfield residents gathered to reflect on what they’ve been through this year.
Along with the quads and Joseph (William Brown), the Winter/Brown household was noisy and chaotic on Christmas Day morning, but all Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) could think about was Paul not answering her calls.

This prompted a worried Chesney (Sam Aston) and Todd (Gareth Pierce) to go and check on Paul and Billy (Daniel Brocklebank), and let’s just say they were left regretting that!
As night fell, the family gathered around the laptop to speak with Bernie.
She was in the prison visting room and spoke to the quads about being home soon, and then asked the adults how their day had been.

After Gemma revealed Paul and Billy spent time doing the ‘horizontal tango’ (sorry), Bernie overheard Away in a Manger playing in the background and decided to sing along.

In what was more than likely Paul’s last Christmas, it didn’t exactly turn out like he planned but one thing is for certain.
It was definitely memorable.
