Monday round-up: a review of the weekend’s Premier League results

As the end of the season gets closer and closer, each batch of Premier League results get more and more crucial. Whether it’s teams fighting to stay in the coveted Premier League or teams battling near the top-end of the table in the hunt for European football, every Premier League result counts.

    Saturday’s Premier League highlights

For me, the clear highlight of Saturday’s Premier League results came at Anfield, where Everton beat Liverpool 2-0, the first time Everton have won at Anfield since 1999 – a stat that Everton fans will be glad to see the back of. Whilst I understand that he’s been thrown in at the deep-end due to Liverpool’s never-ending injuries (someone must’ve put a curse on them) it seems like new centre-back Ozan Kabak is struggling to adapt to the Premier League right away.

Ozan Kabak has not had the easiest start to his Liverpool career.

But surely it can’t get much worse for the 20-year-old, right? Jonathan Wilson from The Guardian discusses this here.

In addition to this Premier League result from Saturday, Fulham grabbed a huge 3 points at home against bottom of the table, Sheffield United. This win puts them just 3 points behind Newcastle United – thanks to Newcastle losing 3-1 to Manchester United on Sunday – and gives Scott Parker’s men a real glimmer of hope in their bid for survival.

Honestly, I think they can do it. Although they started the season poorly, now that Scott Parker has key players back from injury and has them playing decent football, I could see them making a great escape. And if it stays this close, that last game of the season between Fulham and Newcastle will be nothing short of exciting.

Moving onto Sunday’s Premier League results, which as an Arsenal fan, was a mixed day for me. Starting at the London Stadium, David Moyes and his expectation-defying West Ham side defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 thanks to goals from Michail Antonio and serial-dancer Jesse Lingard. This win put the Hammers into fourth place – yes, really.

Tomáš Souček has been outstanding for West Ham this season - Monday's round-up of the weekend's Premier League results
Tomáš Souček has been outstanding for West Ham this season.

Surely, they couldn’t finish in a Champions League spot? Well, if they do, a lot of the credit would have to be given to Tomáš Souček. Not many players come into the Premier League and make an impact right away, but Soucek has hit the ground, not just running, but sprinting, since signing a permanent deal. Michael Lee from Planet Football looks at just how good Souček has been for West Ham this season.

Finally, Manchester City, inevitably, defeated Arsenal 1-0 at The Emirates Stadium in the 4:30PM kick-off on Sunday. Whilst the game was pretty dull at times/throughout – depending on who you support – one thing is becoming painfully clear for Arsenal. Maybe, just maybe, captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang isn’t the striker that Arsenal need.

Hear me out, okay? I understand he’s been Arsenal’s main source of goals since his arrival back in 2018, but this season, besides the hat-trick last weekend, he’s been pretty disappointing. Whether he’s played down the middle or, much to my distaste, played out on the left, he just looks very tame at times. He’s not the best passer or dribbler, hence why I dislike him playing out on the left so much, and his speed isn’t what it used to be. He even got outpaced by John Stones at one point during the game. In my defence, it’s not just me who thinks this, as Jamie Redknapp also believes that Aubameyang may be “past his best”.
