Mohamad Salah is confident Liverpool are capable of ‘doing something special’ this season following Saturday’s dramatic comeback win over Crystal Palace.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were below par in the first half and looked likely to be heading for a damaging defeat when Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty put the home side into a deserved lead.

The controversial sending off of Jordan Ayew in the 75th minute turned the contest in Liverpool’s favour, however, and within 90 seconds of Palace having been reduced to 10 men Salah struck the equaliser.

Liverpool subsequently poured forward in search of the goal that would send them top of the league and it was duly delivered by substitute Harvey Elliott as injury time approached.

Victory moved the Reds a point ahead of Arsenal, having played a game more, and Salah is starting to see similarities between the current Liverpool team and the one which cantered to the title back in 2020.

‘I see the mentality to keep fighting until the end and we did that in this game, the last game and the game before,’ said Salah.

‘It’s something positive we can take from that. Of course we have a new team now because there are six or seven players who are new in the starting line-up.

‘We just have to give them our advice. They are learning a lot and they are really nice guys who are able to learn.

‘From 2019 I think there are similarities but the other guys achieved a lot we need to give them credit. But I’m sure we can do something special this year.’

Those sentiments were echoed by Elliott, who added: ‘We’re going in the right direction. There’s a lot of the season left.

‘We need to make sure we keep getting the three points and if we’re contenders at the end of the season then let’s go for it.

‘The aim is to win the Premier League.’
