Mirror Sport – United go for Gareth
The back page of the Daily Mirror reports that Man Utd are eyeing up England football boss Gareth Southgate to replace Erik ten Hag – who’s facing the sack.
Elsewhere the paper reports on the Man Utd teen sensation Kobbie Mainoo being called up to the England senior squad for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
England face Brazil on Saturday and Belgium on 26 March – both at Wembley – their final games before Gareth Southgate names his Euro 2024 squad.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe makes Gareth Southgate his No.1 choice to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready to replace Erik ten Hag with Gareth Southgate after the England manager received the backing of Manchester United club legends.
Ratcliffe has been busy shaking up United after his deal for 27.7 per cent of the club was officially signed off last month. The petrochemicals billionaire has already hired Omar Berrada as chief executive and is trying to poach Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth for the top job.
The Daily Star reports that Ratcliffe has settled on Southgate as the right man to lead United on the pitch. The 71-year-old and INEOS’ head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford have heard glowing endorsements from the United legends they have spoken to and are ready to make a bold move this summer.
Southgate is currently focused on England’s campaign at Euro 2024 in Germany this summer. But his contract expires in December and he has resisted committing to a new deal, despite the FA’s insistence.

Kobbie Mainoo gets England senior call-up as Man Utd star rewarded for breakthrough season
Kobbie Mainoo has been called up to the England senior team for next week’s games against Brazil and Belgium.
The FA said in a statement: “Kobbie Mainoo has received his first call-up to the England men’s senior squad. The 18-year-old was initially part of the MU21s squad but has been drafted into Gareth Southgate’s group.
“All other 25 players reported to St. George’s Park on Tuesday ahead of the forthcoming internationals against Brazil and Belgium. Manchester United midfielder Mainoo has previously represented England at MU17 through to MU19 level.”
Mainoo’s call-up marks a U-turn from boss Southgate, who had originally left the midfielder out of his squad for the March break. Instead, the Manchester United star was included in the Under-21s group.

Football regulator moves closer with fresh scrutiny expected of Newcastle owners
An independent regulator has taken a massive step towards creation after the government’s football governance bill was finally introduced to parliament with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hailing it as a “historic moment” for the sport.
The bill, which has been three years in the making, will now go through the regular parliamentary process before becoming law and ministers want it in place before the general election.
It will see powers granted to establish a regulator that will aim to improve the financial sustainability of clubs, safeguard the heritage of English football and place supporters at the core of decision-making.
And its creation is expected to see Newcastle United’s ownership placed under fresh scrutiny. Under the new laws, clubs will have to obtain a licence to operate and that will only be granted when they have proved the identity of their ultimate owner. That will apply to existing owners as well as prospective owners.
