How the 2024 Winter Fuel Payment is changing as MPs vote on Keir Starmer’s cuts
Unite chief Sharon Graham has accused Keir Starmer of ‘picking the pockets of pensioners’ as pressure mounts on the Government to U-turn on means testing winter fuel payments.
Prime minister Keir Starmer said earlier this week he is determined to make ‘tough decisions’ and is prepared to be ‘unpopular’ ahead of a vote to scrap the winter fuel payment for pensioners this week.
But Graham, general secretary of the UK’s biggest trade union, has instead called for a tax on the ‘1% wealthiest’, which she claimed would raise £25 billion rather than the £1.2 billion restricting winter fuel payments would save.
She said: ‘The wealthiest in the country have been at the front of the queue for 14 years. I want to see workers and communities now at the front of the queue and that is why we’re saying they must do a U-turn on this very, very, very cruel (policy).’
