A Metropolitan Police officer was jailed for assaulting a woman while off-duty.

PC Thomas Andrews pushed a woman to the ground so hard that she was left with grazing marks.

He was arrested on July 9 last year, after members of the public called the police to Brockley, in south-east London, at around 1am.

Andrews was suspended from duty while investigations took place.

He pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm and Woolwich Crown Court sentenced him to one year and four months behind bars yesterday. He was also made the subject of a restraining order.

Andrews, who was part of the Met’s Central South Command Unit, will face a misconduct hearing ‘as soon as possible’, the force said.

Detective chief superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, who leads the unit, said: ‘I am saddened by this incident and grateful to members of the public who raised the alarm, resulting in PC Andrews’ prompt arrest.

‘Under the leadership of Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, everyone in the Met is clear that we must root out those who corrupt the integrity of our organisation. This will take time, but we are absolutely committed to achieving high standards.’

This is just the latest in a string of scandals the Met has been wrapped up in, as it continues to try and recover from its sinking reputation.

Monday saw killer cop Wayne Couzens get handed another 19-month jail sentence for exposing himself to women three times before he murdered Sarah Everard.

The former officer, 50, is already serving a whole life sentence for abducting Sarah as she walked home before raping her and strangling her in March 2021.

The new sentence will not affect his punishment as he has no chance of parole and will die behind bars.

The new details of Couzens’ offending will raise further questions over whether police missed chances to stop him before he murdered 33-year-old marketing executive Sarah.

An independent inquiry has been opened to assess this.
