    Sunday Papers – ‘Merciless Putin’ violates ceasefire, threats to UK

    The Sunday papers continue its coverage of the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, as Russian forces ramp up their attacks. The lead for most papers is Putin’s violation of a ceasefire – Russian artillery hit the Ukrainian city of Mariupol after Russia disregarded an agreed ceasefire. The Russian president’s comments on western sanctions being akin to war also make the front splashes.

    The Sunday Times – Merciless Putin shells evacuees 

    The Sunday Times reports on fury and fear in Mariupol after Putin violates a ceasefire. The paper says the world “watched in horror” as Russian artillery “pummelled” the besieged Ukrainian city.  An evacuation from the southern port city along an agreed route had to be suspended within minutes after Russia disregarded it and continued its bombardment, the paper reports. Its headline describes Vladimir Putin as “merciless”.

    The Sunday Telegraph – Don’t test us, Wallace tells Putin 

    The Sunday Telegraph has a warning from the UK defence secretary to Vladimir Putin. Ben Wallace has warned the Russian President not to “test” the UK, indicating that more funds could be directed to the light weapons “wreaking havoc” on Russian and aircraft in Ukraine. In an interview for the paper, Wallace said Putin would be mistaken if he “underestimated” the UK’s resolve.

    The Sunday Mirror reports on Ukraine’s continuing resistance to the Russian invasion. The paper reports on the outrage as Putin bombed during a ceasefire. The paper features an image of an unarmed Ukrainian man confronting Russian soldiers.

    The Sunday Express – Truss: This is the struggle of our generation 

    The war in Ukraine is the “struggle of our generation”, the foreign secretary says in the Sunday Express, adding that it is a “fight for freedom, democracy and sovereignty”. But she insists Ukraine “will ultimately prevail”.

    Mail on Sunday – Boris’s six-point plan to defeat Putin 

    Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s “six-point plan” to defeat Vladimir Putin as he moves to assume leadership of global efforts to end the war in Ukraine, leads the Daily Mail on Sunday. Among the measures, the PM has called for the creation of an international humanitarian coalition for Ukraine, a boost to Kyiv’s military self-defence and a ratcheting up of sanctions against Moscow.

    The Observer – Defiant Putin warns the west: your sanctions are akin to an act of war

    The Observer reports on Vladimir Putin’s warning to the West – that sanctions are akin to an act of war. The paper notes that Russia’s foreign ministry claimed that the UK was playing a leading – if not the main role – in what it called the “sanctions hysteria”. A spokeswoman said it left Moscow no choice but to take tough retaliatory measures.

    The Independent’s front splash reports on the Russian president’s comments that western sanctions are akin to a declaration of war. The paper leads with an image of civilians crossing a destroyed bridge.

    Meanwhile, the Sunday People reports that British dockers refused to unload Russian oil from a tanker on Saturday in a show of solidarity with Ukraine. The paper says they took action after the German-registered vessel was to able to “skirt” sanctions.

    Daily Star Sunday – Mad Vlad dying of cancer 

    The Daily Star Sunday reports on claims that Putin is “gravely ill”. It says US and US spies have claimed that he has bowel cancer. The Russian president is not known to be ill.
