Lady Glenconner, a childhood friend of the late Queen Elizabeth II, has blasted Meghan Markle for believing that royal life would be like living the life of a film star.
Speaking on the Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth podcast, Lady Glenconner said: “I think the thing about Meghan was, she had no idea what was really expected of her really.”
In the short span of just four years, Meghan met Prince Harry, the pair got married and then made the decision to step down from royal duties.
The couple now live in the US with their two children – Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two – with Meghan having previously struggled to adjust to her newfound life as a royal.
Speaking on the podcast, Lady Glenconner added: “I think [Meghan] just thought it was sort of like being another actress, you know. Riding around in a golden coach and everything like that.”

Lady Glenconner, who was also lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret, added: “And actually, being a member of the Royal Family – a lot of it is extremely boring.”
She then opened up about being sat next to American politician John Kerry at the King’s Coronation back in May, revealing that she asked him what America really thought of the Sussexes.
Sharing his thoughts, she said: “He said, ‘We all feel very very sorry for Harry. I think I can just leave it at that’.”
Back in 2019, when the pair were still senior royals, Meghan opened up about what she thought of royal life – in particular, the attention that came with it.

Speaking to Tom Bradby on the ITV documentary “Harry & Meghan: An African Journey”, Meghan said: “I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair.
“And that’s the part that’s really hard to reconcile.”
She claimed that friends had warned her, prior to marrying Prince Harry, that being a member of the world’s most famous family would mean that she would be under scrutiny and constant glare from the public spotlight.
Meghan added: “In all fairness, I had no idea, which probably sounds difficult to understand and hear.

“But when I first met my now-husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy, but my British friends said to me, ‘I’m sure he’s great but you shouldn’t do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life.’”
Speaking at the time, the Duchess said: “And I, very naively — I’m American.
“We don’t have that there — [I said], ‘What are you talking about? That doesn’t make any sense. I’m not in any tabloids.’ I didn’t get it. So it’s been, yeah, it’s been complicated.”
