Mauricio Pochettino reveals Chelsea issue that has left him ‘really upset’ following defeat to Manchester United

Mauricio Pochettino has been left ‘really upset’ with Chelsea’s inability to deal with the aerial threat of opposition players this season.

Chelsea are among the shortest sides in the Premier League and have conceded headed goals in each of their last four games – with Scott McTominay towering above Levi Colwill to score Manchester United’s winner at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Chelsea have conceded six headed goals this season with only  Luton, Brentford and Sheffield United conceding more.

The Blues are in action away to Everton on Sunday with Sean Dyche’s side on average the tallest side in the league with Pochettino identifying it as a major problem ahead of their trip to Goodison Park.

‘It can be a problem, yes,’ the Chelsea boss said.

‘We need to be more aggressive and try to avoid conceding chances like corners or wide free-kicks. We need to be clever in the way we are going to work and try to stop them.

‘In football, it’s the way you approach the game, the attitude and then being clever, trying to avoid giving the possibility to the opponents to use their strengths.’

Pochettino was left particularly frustrated by McTominay’s winner on Wednesday night in Manchester.

‘We need to improve,’ he said. ‘Conceding in this way, maybe I am not showing too much emotion, but I am really upset. We need to work much, much better in these situations.

‘It is both organisation and desire. For me, we need to stop the crosses. Because after if it is ‘Oh it’s not my problem because the opponent crossed’ then for the defensive line it is so difficult to defend these type of situations.’

Everton secured a huge 3-0 win over Newcastle United midweek to move out of the relegation zone having been hit with a 10-point deduction for breaching the league’s financial rules.

Chelsea remain in 10th place after their sixth league defeat of the season against United.
