Matt Smith has reflected on his Doctor Who tenure, stating that his exit from the hit BBC sci-fi series could have been ‘better’.

The actor starred as the 11th Time Lord and exited the show in the 2013 Christmas special which saw him face off against the Daleks and alien invaders.

Smith’s Doctor then regenerated into Peter Capaldi’s iteration.

Sharing his thoughts on whether he was a fan of how his storyline ended, Smith told audiences at Motor City Comic: ‘Well, look, it’s always hard leaving that show because it’s such a wonderful part to leave.

‘I knew I had to leave really but part of you goes, “Oh I could stay for a bit”, regenerating is a tough… was it the best episode it could be? I dunno, maybe, maybe not.’

He continued: ‘But I thought Steven [Moffat] wrote some really great stuff. And it was nice, I had Jenna [Coleman] and Karen [Gillan] there as the two companions and stuff so yeah – look, I was proud of the body of work up to that point. But I think everything can always be better.’

Doctor Who is just days away from returning to television screens with current Time Lord Jodie Whittaker’s last outing.

The upcoming special, titled The Power of the Doctor, will see Whittaker step down once and for all as the 13th Doctor, with Ncuti Gatwa set to take over the keys to the Tardis.

Chatting to Metro.co.uk about the emotional feature-length episode, showrunner Chris Chibnall teased that her regeneration will look very different to past Doctors.

‘It is different. It’s visually very different,’ he told us. ‘And where it takes place is different. I think I can say that without it being too much of a spoiler.

‘It definitely feels different. It’s not going to take place in the same place as the previous regenerations’.

The Power of the Doctor will air on October 23 at 7:30pm on BBC One.
