Mark Selby has booked a World Championship quarter-final meeting with John Higgins after downing Gary Wilson 13-7 in the last 16.

The four-time world champion came into the latest trip to the Crucible as many people’s tip for the title after finding some form in recent weeks and he has remained solid over the opening two rounds.

It has not been the absolute peak of the Jester from Leicester’s powers so far, but he had too much for Wilson in Sheffield and ran out a reasonably comfortable winner.

It had not looked comfortable earlier in the match, with the score level at 6-6, but Selby powered ahead from there, winning five frames on the spin to open up a big lead ahead of the final session on Monday evening.

Wilson picked up one more frame on Monday, but Selby was the stronger and eased into the last eight.

Waiting for him there is Higgins, a man with whom he has a long Crucible history, having met in Sheffield five times in the past.

Higgins leads that specific head-to-head 3-2, although Selby won their last meeting, a big one, in the 2017 final.

Wilson ends an excellent season, which saw him win his first ranking title at the Scottish Open and reach the Crucible as a seeded player for the first time.
