Margot Robbie laying low because ‘everyone’s sick of the sight of me’

Margot Robbie has said she sometimes wonders whether people are ‘sick of her’ after dominating the worldwide box office as Barbie.

The Australian actress and film producer, 33, was already a household name but was, frankly, inescapable in 2023 as Barbie-fever swept the planet last summer.

It topped the UK box office for six weeks between the end of July and the beginning of September, eventually grossing $1.4bn (£1.1bn) internationally.

The film, which also starred Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell, gave Warner Bros. their highest-ever opening weekend worldwide and also became the highest-grossing film by a solo female director.

However, after some time off following the Greta Gerwig movie’s success, Margot has now confessed that her break from our screens has been somewhat self-enforced.

‘On the acting side, this is the longest I haven’t acted on a set, because we finished Barbie in October of 2022,’ she said, almost 18 months on from when she last stepped foot in front of a camera.

Speaking to Deadline, she continued: ‘So, it’s already been more than a year since I was on set as an actor, and other than Covid, that’s the first time that’s ever happened.

‘I also think everyone’s probably sick of the sight of me for now. I should probably disappear from screens for a while,’ the Wolf of Wall Street actress then admitted.

‘Honestly, if I did another movie too soon, people would say, “Her again? We just did a whole summer with her. We’re over it.” I don’t know what I’ll do next, but I hope it’s a little while away.’

Margot, who landed her first major role in 2008 when she played Donna Freedman for three years on Australian soap Neighbours, went on to say Barbie’s success was ‘validating’ after putting so much hard work into it.

As well as being its lead star, the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actress also co-produced the film alongside her husband Tom Ackerley and Harry Potter alumni David Heyman.

Despite being worried that people might be ‘sick of the sight’ of her, Margot definitely turned heads on the red carpet at the star-studded 81st annual Golden Globes on Sunday night.

On the big night, which saw her nominated for the award for best actress in a musical or comedy, she stepped out in a Barbie-inspired bright pink outfit, recreating the look of the Superstar Barbie doll from 1977.

While Margot didn’t win any awards on the night herself, the hit of summer 2023 did become the inaugural winner of the cinematic and box office achievement award, as well as the award for best original song, which went to What Was I Made For?

After the film’s success, data taken from Google and the Office of National Statistics has indicated that Margot might well be a popular baby name in 2024 – far from being sick of the sight of her, it appears the public wants more Margots in the world, and more of Margot herself.
