Marcus Rashford’s brother aims dig at Gareth Southgate after England draw | Football

The brother and agent of Marcus Rashford appeared to aim a dig at Gareth Southgate following England’s woeful draw with Denmark at Euro 2024.

The Three Lions were lacklustre in Frankfurt on Thursday as they laboured to a 1-1 draw against a Danish side they ought to have beaten.

This result and the underwhelming win over Serbia in their tournament opener has left Southgate with much to ponder, with England’s attack looking worryingly blunt and uninspired.

Though the squad is packed with attacking talent, several forwards, who used to be England stalwarts, didn’t make the plane, including Jack Grealish and Rashford.

The Manchester United star wasn’t even in the 33-man preliminary squad having endured a tough campaign with his club, scoring just eight goals in 43 games.

But given that he’s always been reliable for his country, even if as just an impact sub, there were many that felt he should have been picked in spite of recent form.

And those feelings were brought up again during the Denmark draw by none other than Rashford’s brother and agent Dwaine Maynard.

He posted on his Instagram story: ‘It’s hard to sit and watch when you honestly believe your man could make a difference!’

The front three of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden were all hauled off in a triple change in the second-half against the Danes, with Ollie Watkins, Jarrod Bowen and Ebrerechi Eze coming on, though it hardly made a difference.

It has been said that England’s lack of pace in attack is one of the main causes for their issues, and speed is something Rashford would certainly have brought to the game.

Explaining the decision to leave the 26-year-old out of his squad, Southgate said last month: ‘These are of course difficult calls, you’re talking about players who are very good players and who have been an important of what we’ve done over a number of years.

‘With Marcus I just feel other players in that area of the pitch have had better seasons, it’s as simple as that.’

Following that decision, Rashford, who had played at the last four major tournaments, posted on Instagram: ‘Wishing Gareth and the boys all the best for the up and coming tournament.’
