Mauricio Pochettino is expected to take over at Chelsea (Picture: PA)
Marcel Desailly believes Mauricio Pochettino could be a success at Chelsea, but admits that he had a problem in dealing with the biggest players during his time at Paris Saint-Germain.
Pochettino is the runaway favourite to be Chelsea’s next permanent manager and an announcement is expected shortly, although the appointment is yet to be confirmed.
Stamford Bridge would be his third Premier League destination after being in charge of Southampton and Tottenham previously, impressing in both jobs.
The Argentine was last in work at PSG, where he won Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France, but it was not a resounding success for him in Paris.
There were questions marks over whether Pochettino could get the best out of the superstars in the PSG squad and Desailly admits that is still a doubt, despite thinking he would still be a good candidate for the job.
‘Pochettino could be a good choice, he’s all the time loved by his players and he has the belief and the understanding at the highest level but also for him he realised the same problem at PSG,’ Desailly told LondonWorld.
‘Handling top-class players was something difficult for him. He had a problem there. But for Chelsea to rebuild and create a winning mentality, he could be the correct man.’
Frank Lampard remains in temporary charge of the Blues for now and will welcome Nottingham Forest to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Speaking earlier this month about the prolonged search for a new permanent boss, Lampard said: ‘Do they [Chelsea] need to take their time to get the right manager? Yeah, they absolutely should do.
‘We are at that stage of the season now where we understand that we are not going to get into Europe, and other managers are probably going, “I’ll take a look at this and wait till pre-season when I can enforce what I want to do”.
‘It’s not silly on their part, we’ve got the top four in the run-in and that is going to be a difficult process of games.’
