Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has urged his old club to give young winger Alejandro Garnacho more of a run in the first team.

Garnacho has made five first team appearances for United since making his debut last term.

The 18-year-old came off the bench in United’s opening Premier League defeat to Brighton this season.

The Madrid-born youngster, who plays for Argentina U20s, was then an unused substitute for United’s following four top-flight games before being dropped from the squad for the last three.

Garnacho joined United’s youth team from Atletico Madrid in 2020 and has also played twice in the Europa League this season under Erik ten Hag.

He helped United win the FA Youth Cup in 2021-22 and was named the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year.

Parker feels Garnacho, who has scored four goals in five games for Argentina U20s, should be given more of an opportunity to impress.

‘I think really you have to look at what you got within the squad, there’s a younger player, Alejandro Garnacho,’ Parker told BeMyBet.

‘Everyone was kind of talking about him in the pre-season.

‘Garnacho [is] tenacious… a lot of Argentinians are playing with a fire in their belly and are a bit fiery, and he’s got a competitive edge.’

United paid Atletico £420k to sign Garnacho two years ago and the youngster swapped his shirt number from No.75 to No.49 in the summer.

In last season’s FA Youth Cup final, Garnacho scored twice to help United win the competition for the first time in over a decade.

Before switching his international alliance to Argentina, Garnacho played for Spain U18s, making three appearances.

‘Incredible moment making my debut at 17 years old for Manchester United in the Premier League at the Theatre of Dreams,’ he posted on Twitter in April.

‘I can’t put into words what I’m feeling right now, I’ve been dreaming of this moment since I was 4 years old. Remember guys, Dreams really do come true.’
