Manchester United passed up the chance to sign Timo Werner ahead of Tottenham, according to reports.

Spurs are on the verge of signing the RB Leipzig striker on loan for the remainder of the season after reaching an agreement with the Bundesliga club over the weekend.

United are also in the market to improve Erik ten Hag’s attacking options and Werner, who has scored two goals in 14 appearances for RB Leipzig this season, was on the club’s shortlist for the January transfer window.

However, Fabrizio Romano reports that United opted not to pursue a deal for Werner the former Chelsea striker does not fit the profile of forward they are looking for.

‘It’s a loan, Spurs have buy option but not mandatory so they can get a look at the player before committing,’ Romano told CaughtOffside.

‘Timo is super hungry as he believes this is great opportunity for him.

‘Manchester United also considered Werner as a possibility but then they decided not to proceed also because it’s not clear yet what kind of player they want.’

Werner is travelling to London on Monday and is expected to finalise his return to the Premier League within days.

Spurs also have the option to make the move permanent for €15m-20m (£12.9m-£17.2m) at the end of the season.

‘It’s a win-win for everyone,’ Red Bull Soccer’s technical director, Mario Gomez, told Sport1 when asked about Werner’s imminent move to Spurs.

‘Germany benefits from it. We benefit from it because we get a player going.

‘He will play regularly, that’s what Tottenham has conveyed to us.’

Meanwhile, RB Leipzig head coach, Marco Rose, believes Werner could use the move to Spurs as an opportunity to boost his confidence and improve his lack of playing time.

‘Timo wants match practice, which I can’t guarantee him at the moment,’ Rose said.

‘He wants to go to the European Championships, and maybe it will help us if he comes back in top condition under certain circumstances.

‘We wish him all the best and keep our fingers crossed that he gets back on his feet there and gains self-confidence. That’s the most important thing for him.’
