Munich Disaster 1958

Tragedy struck at the heart of Manchester United in 1958 when the plane carrying the team home from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade crashed.

The crash occurred on February 6 in Munich and it claimed the lives of 23 people, with 21 passengers surviving the incident.

Of the 23 who died, eight – namely BentByrneColmanEdwardsJonesPeggTaylor and Whelan – were United players.

It has since defined the club with the evolution of Busby’s babes. The team fielded from youth players and borrowed following the Munich air disaster.

It also regularly qualifies for the Champions League and has been crowned champions of England for a record 20 times.

The club has the nickname “the Red Devils.”

The Red Devils play all their home games at the Old Trafford stadium based in Manchester. It is the second-largest stadium in England behind Wembley with a capacity of 74,140. It is the eleventh biggest stadium in Europe and is one of the most iconic stadiums in the world.

Why is it named Old Trafford?

Old Trafford was a crossing point over the River Irwell in ancient times. The name Old Trafford comes from the time when there were two Trafford Halls, Old Trafford Hall and New Trafford Hall.

The name of the area around Old Trafford Hall may subsequently have become shortened to Old Trafford.

Why is it called Stretford End?

The Stretford End, officially named West Stand, is a stand on the west side of Old Trafford.
It took its name from the nearby town of Stretford, as it is in the direction of Stretford, looking from the centre of the pitch.
