Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of Manchester United for the final time as interim boss against Leicester City on Sunday.

United scored four times in the first-half in a 5-2 win over the Foxes in van Nistelrooy’s first game in charge in the Carabao Cup last week.

After a draw against Chelsea and a first European win of the season against PAOK on Thursday, the Dutchman will be looking to sign off in style.

Amad Diallo strengthened his case for a starting role with a superb individual performance against the Greek champions, scoring twice in the second-half. The Ivorian started on the right of United’s attack with Alejandro Garnacho on the left with Marcus Rashford emerging from the subs bench in the second-half.

While he was forced off with a foot issue late on, Amad was back on the pitch bare-footed after the final whistle, with Van Nistelrooy hopeful he will be passed fit for Sunday’s match when speaking at a press conference on Friday.

Mason Mount came on as a second-half sub on Thursday having recovered from his most recent setback but United remain without a host of other players.

Kobbie Mainoo has yet to return to full training and remains sidelined along with Harry Maguire, with both left out of the latest England squad this week.

Luke Shaw returned to first-team training for the first time in three months but won’t be fit enough to return on Sunday. Tyrell Malacia is also working his way back and is likely to be given minutes for the Under-21 side before any first-team action.

Leny Yoro meanwhile is making progress and could be in contention for Rubem Amorim’s first game in charge against Ipswich Town on 24 November.

How United could line up this weekend…

Van Nistelrooy named a strong side on Thursday night with Matthijs de Ligt the only first-team player given the night off.
