Phil Neville is in ‘advanced talks’ to become the new head coach of Major League Soccer side Portland Timbers, according to reports.

The Manchester United legend, a member of the iconic Class of 92, lost his job as boss of fellow MLS team Inter Miami in June.

Since he was dismissed by the club owned by David Beckham, Neville has been working as a coach for the Canada national team.

But according to The Athletic, Neville is now expected to be named as the new head coach of Portland Timbers.

Neville, who also previously managed England Women, enjoyed a stellar playing career and won countless trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

The 46-year-old, brother of Gary Neville, made a total of 386 appearances for the Red Devils between 1994 and 2005.

His last managerial role at Inter Miami ended in disaster, with his side left bottom of the Eastern Conference as he fell out with the club’s fans and shouted at a reporter, telling him to ‘show some f***ing respect’.

Beckham, though, sent a heartfelt message to Neville after sacking him earlier this year.

‘When we appointed Phil we knew he would give Inter Miami his all and I have watched him work incredibly hard and with real commitment towards the ambitions we set out for the club,’ Beckham said in a statement at the time.

‘He and his family embraced Miami and he has devoted himself to the drive to bring success to the city and to our fans. Phil has made a real contribution to the culture of our club with his qualities as a leader and knowledge as a coach… Sadly we feel the time is right to make a change.’
