Mason Mount has been told to ‘read the room’ by angry Manchester United fans after he posted an injury update on Instagram in the wake of Sunday’s 3-0 defeat against Tottenham.
The former Chelsea midfielder’s Old Trafford career has been a tale of frustration so far with fitness issues preventing him from making the impact he would have anticipated making at the Theatre of Dreams.
The England international made his latest comeback against Twente in the Europa League last Thursday after a month on the sidelines.
Mount started on the bench yesterday and was thrust into an unenviable position by his manager Erik ten Hag who introduced him at the start of the second half with his team trailing and down to 10 men following the dismissal of Bruno Fernandes.
Unable to stem the flow of one way traffic towards United’s goal, Mount’s afternoon took another turn for the worse when he was forced off in the 85th minute following a clash with Radu Dragusin.
Mount posted a picture on Instagram on Monday morning which showed him getting stitched up and the damage is unlikely to keep him out of his side’s midweek game against Porto.
‘I’m all good, just a scratch,’ he wrote. ‘Thanks for the messages.’
The image was subsequently posted on X by a prominent United fan account and the majority of responses were less than sympathetic towards the struggling £60 million signing.
‘Read the room, man,’ said one disgruntled fan. ‘Awful signing.’ And another added: ‘Here’s a message, don’t smile on socials after you’ve played a part in one of the worst Man Utd performances in a decade of terrible performances.
Another fan noted Mount was ‘Always quick to interact and respond. Got to say his PR is off the the charts.’
‘What planet are these guys on,’ said one more fan, despairingly.
