A man in his 30s has died after he was shot near an Underground station in east London.

The residents of Linton Road, Barking, had a rude awakening in the early hours of the morning today after shots were fired on the road just minutes from the Barking train and Tube station.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after police received reports of an injured man at about 4.35am.

They discovered a man, thought to be in his 30s, had been shot and injured.

Despite the best efforts of the London Ambulance Service crews, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed, the police confirmed.

Now detectives are probing the incident as murder and a crime scene remains in place.

Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Lewis Basford said: ‘I understand the shock and concern local residents will be feeling following this incident, but I want to reassure them that a team of experienced detectives are already working diligently to piece together the events that has led to this shooting and identify who is responsible.

‘Local residents will see increased police activity in and around the Linton Road area and I would ask them for patience while officers carry out vital work.

‘If you have any concerns, or information that could assist the investigation, then please speak to one of them or contact police.’

Linton Road remains closed in both directions along with George Street, Cambridge Road and London Road and eight buses have been diverted.

Make It London, a hub for small businesses and enterprises on Linton Road, warned customers of a temporary closure this morning.

It said access to the space and its car park is currently restricted ‘due to an ongoing police investigation,’ apologising for ‘any inconvenience’ as it hoped to resume usual operations as soon as possible.
