Man City shame at Wembley, club release statement over Liverpool game
Manchester City has condemned the actions of some of the Man City fans in attendance at last night’s Wembley game against Liverpool.
Some Man City supporters were heard chanting through a minute’s silence for the victims of the Hillsborough disaster.
Both teams had lined up around the centre circle for the minute’s silence – but the referee Michael Oliver had to cut it short because of the Man City fans behind the goal chanting through the silence.
The Hillsborough disaster
It’s been 33-years since the Hillsborough disaster which saw 97 Liverpool fans lose their lives at an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.
The Liverpool fans at the opposite end of the stadium reacted angrily and Oliver blew his whistle around 20 seconds into the silence. Manchester City have now released a statement expressing their disappointment in the fans who disrupted the silence, whilst also apologising to Liverpool.
A club statement said: “Manchester City are extremely disappointed with the actions of some City supporters during the minute’s silence before today’s game. The Club sincerely apologises to all those connected with Liverpool Football Club.”
Manchester City v Liverpool FA Cup semi-finals
Liverpool won the game, they were leading 3-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Ibrahima Konate and a Sadio Mane double. But the semi-final saw Man City crawl back into the game with goals from Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva. But Liverpool took the 3-2 victory in the thrilling encounter to reach their first FA Cup final in 10 years.
During Liverpool v Man City halftime, presenter Gary Lineker mentioned the incident.
He said: “One news item I want to read out before we move on, this match was meant to be preceded by a minute’s silence for the 33rd anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. This was cut short by referee Michael Oliver after persistent chants from the City end, which is obviously disappointing.
