The i Sport – Man City 3-1 West Ham: Manchester City win the Premier League: 115 charges
The i’s back page leads on Manchester City winning their fourth Premier League title. The back page notes that despite all their success, they still have 115 charges looming over their heads.
Manchester City say they will “never get bored” of winning after becoming the first English side in history to win four titles in a row. Beaten manager Mikel Arteta called the serial champions “the best team in the history of the Premier League” after coming up two points short despite Arsenal beating Everton 2-1 at the Emirates on the final day. City just had to win at home to West Ham and needed only 79 seconds to take the lead, Phil Foden’s strike sucking all the air out of the Emirates Stadium nearly 200 miles away.
Elsewhere, the paper reports on Jurgen Klopp’s final match as Liverpool boss. “Well, John, you’re immortal now,” Bill Shankly informed Jock Stein after Celtic had won the 1967 European Cup a few weeks before Jurgen Klopp’s birth. At Anfield, immortality is designated by the “Managers’ Banner”, perhaps the most significant of all the flags that are paraded by the Kop before kick-off.
The men who made Liverpool are depicted in profile like Caesars on the back of Roman coins; Shankly, Paisley, Fagan, Dalglish, Benitez and Klopp. Five of them won the title, four of them brought European Cups home, four of them won the FA Cup. Two were remarkable communicators who seemed to speak directly to the city.
Klopp is the only one to feature in every category. As they sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, another banner appeared on the Kop which very succinctly summed up Liverpool’s journey under Klopp: “Doubters, Believers, Conquerors.”
