Make Me Prime Minister ‘axed’ by Channel 4 after just one series

Thank god Channel 4’s Apprentice-style reality show Make Me Prime Minister isn’t how they’re actually made, because it’s reportedly just been axed.

It’s a relief indeed, until it dawns that our current system has gobbled through four real Prime Ministers in five years – one of which, Liz Truss, lasted less time than it took for a cabbage to rot.

But it wasn’t meant to be for the series co-hosted Alastair Campbell, who also presents the popular podcast The Rest is Politics and is best known as Tony Blair’s former spin doctor.

The ex-Labour Prime Minister even made a brief appearance on the show.

House of Lords member Baroness Sayeeda Warsi also co-hosted the game show, which saw contestants battling it out to be made Channel 4’s ‘alternative Prime Minister’.

Over six episodes, 12 ambitious Brits took on what were dubbed prime ministerial tasks.

Rather than riding on the buzz of the political hiatus of the time, many simply dubbed the show an ‘Apprentice rip off’.

While The Guardian awarded the show five stars, only eight people have so far voted on Rotten Tomatoes, and the consensus is a measly one star – ouch.

The Sun has now reported that it will not be returning for a second series.

A source told the paper: ‘There was a sense that after having three prime ministers in just five weeks, the country had had enough jostling to reach the top of the greasy pole.

‘With a concept that had never been seen before, the programme was always something of a TV experiment which could have been a success or a flop.’

They added: ‘But trailblazing Channel 4 are never afraid to risk failure and try out a new idea.’

Contestants included Gemma Collins, sports agent Holly Morgan and even pandemic social media sensation, Jackie Weaver – you know, from the spicy parish council Zoom call which went viral.

Just as the show aired, the UK was left dumbstruck as Boris Johnson left office to make way for Truss and her diabolical mini-budget, who within 45 days was replaced by current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak…

    Quick, bring the show back!
