Gareth Southgate challenges his England stars to bounce back from their World Cup heartbreak by earning a first away win against Italy since 1962 to kick-start their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign
MAIL SAYS Gareth Southgate has challenged his England players to prove they have the resilience here in Italy on Thursday night to overcome their Qatar agony.
England face Roberto Mancini’s team in Naples in their first game since the 2-1 defeat by France in the World Cup quarter-finals — with Southgate considering handing Kalvin Phillips a start in midfield, and Jack Grealish also hoping for the nod.
England bounced back to reach the Euro 2020 final after the crushing World Cup semi-final loss to Croatia in 2018 and now Southgate is demanding his players show the same spirit to get their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign off to a positive start.
He said: ‘What we have done in the past is irrelevant because we have to have humility and start again.
‘In a nutshell, this is the type of game we have to start winning. We have (done that) but we need to do it consistently.
