Weird Al Yankovic has spoken out over the portrayal of Madonna in his upcoming biopic, joking that she’s not ‘on his Christmas card list’.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is set to be released next month and stars Daniel Radcliffe in the leading role, alongside Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna and Rainn Wilson as Dr Demento.
Judging from the trailer alone, it is set to be a wild ride and the star-studded cast and crew spoke of what is in store for fans during this weekend’s New York Comic-Con panel.
Appearing via zoom, Al joked to the room: ‘I want to give all props to Eric Appel [director] because I told him, if we’re going to tell my story, we have to do it 100% accurate.
‘I didn’t want some Hollywood biopic that exaggerated for dramatic purposes, I wanted it to be the real story.’
In one scene, Madonna and Al could be seen getting intimate as she approached him to request a parody of her hit single, Like A Virgin – with the real-life artist dropping Like A Surgeon in 1985.

When questioned over what their relationship is and was, and whether he is worried about how she will feel about her portrayal, Al said: ‘She’s not on the current Christmas card list…
‘Her part in the movie is based on a very small nugget of truth. She actually is the person that suggested that I do Like A Surgeon.’

He explained that Madge’s pal came to her with the idea before going to his manager, after which the parody was spawned.
‘We took that little bit of truth and expanded it,’ he laughed.

Evan, who attended NYCC in person beside Daniel and Eric, said that the part of the Queen of Pop was a no brainer to accept.
‘I don’t know one person that hasn’t wanted to cosplay Madonna from the eighties,’ she continued. ‘That era specifically is so iconic.
‘I used to fake sick from school so I could stay home and choreograph the Immaculate Collection and Like A Prayer. I got caught once.
‘So this I feel like I’ve been training for my whole life but leading up to it, I was watching non-stop Madonna interviews, Madonna performances, just taking in as much as I possibly could.

‘Even though it was a parody, I wanted it to be good and believable, so that when we did fly off the rails at the end of the movie, the audience was with me.’
Thankfully, we don’t have to wait long to find out what those ‘fly off the rails’ scenes entail as Weird lands on Roku in just a few weeks.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is set for release on Roku on November 4.
