Macaulay Culkin reveals he nearly purchased the house from Home Alone
Macaulay Culkin has revealed that he almost purchased the house from Home Alone after it went on sale earlier this year, but didn’t for a very understandable reason.
The house from Home Alone, the 1990 Christmas classic starring Macaulay Culkin, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Pesci and John Candy, was listed for sale for a whopping $5.25 million (£4.15 million) earlier this year.
The five-bedroom, six-bathroom property, is located in the Winnetka area of Chicago, Illinois, and was actually used as the exterior for the film – and the 1992 sequel.
Culkin, 44, who made his name starring as Kevin McCallister in the franchise has revealed that he nearly purchased the property earlier this year but ducked out for a rather sweet reason.
‘I had half a mind to buy it – just for giggles,’ Culkin told the audience at Illinois’ Rosemont Theater during a screening of the movie, reported The New York Times.
The actor reportedly said that he imagined turning it into a movie fun house where you can sledge down the stairs as his character does in the first film but decided against it.
‘I got kids. I’m busy, man,’ he told audience members.
The house was completely renovated in 2018 and looks rather different to how the property looked in the film when Kevin booby-trapped the entire play to dupe burglars Harry and Marv.
The house is now a neutral shade throughout without the awkwardly placed statue in the driveway, the creepy tarantula or that red and green wallpaper adorning all the walls.
During the Rosemont show the actor said that his relationship with the Home Alone films has changed as he has become a father and said they are a ‘curse and a blessing.’
‘I look at the movie differently now because of that,’ he told the audience. ‘I watch it through a different lens — I watch it with them. And they have no idea who they’re sitting next to.’
The actor now has two sons named Carson and Dakota with fellow actor Brenda Song, who is best known for starring in the Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
In a recent interview, Culkin revealed that his three-year-old son Dakota has seen the movie and believed that he was Kevin
‘He thinks he’s Kevin,’ he told E! News. ‘I’m like, “Do you remember going down that down the stairs on the sled?” He’s like, “Mmhmm, yep. Sure do.” I’m like, “Do you remember when he had yellow hair?” And he’s like, “Uh-huh, yep”.’
Culkin revealed his son even remembered fighting off burglars and he was forced to tell him: ‘You’re a lying liar who lies’,’ then added, ‘That was me!’
