Media Coverage
The story dominates the UK front pages this morning and has had a busy few days on social media and online news sites. It’s expected to stay top of the news cycle for some time as more details emerge.
Trending – Luxury yacht sinking tragedy met with conspiracy theories online
Details continue to emerge in the luxury boat sinking off the coast of Sicily that has left one person dead, and six more missing. Amongst the missing are British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Other prominent figures from the world of banking and tech are also missing. 15 people were rescued.
Lynch was said to be celebrating the end of his legal woes in the USA when tragedy struck.
In an eerie coincidence, Lynch’s co-defendant in a recent major legal case, Stephen Chamberlain, was killed after being struck by a car on Saturday whilst out jogging.
Basic facts
- A luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday morning due to bad weather
- 15 people were rescued, six are missing and one body has been recovered – believed to be the yacht’s chef
- Amongst those still missing are British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah
- Other prominent names released that are also still missing include Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo
- The search is continuing for the remaining missing six but access to the boat’s cabins is blocked by furniture
- Lynch had been embroiled in a legal battle in the US for more than a decade, he was acquitted in June on multiple fraud charges
- Those on the boat are believed to have been amongst his defence and that the trip was a celebration of the end of his legal troubles
- Separately, his co-defendant in that case, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Saturday after being hit by a car while out for a run in Cambridgeshire.
The reaction
The newspapers reacted with shock and sadness after confirmation that six people remained missing following the sinking of the ship. It’s no surprise the UK papers lead with Mike Lynch – a renowned British tech tycoon, being among the missing.
Some of the papers speak to survivors whilst others look at why the boat sank – with waterspouts being the reported cause.
At the moment the story is mostly dominant in the UK, but we’d expect it to become more global in the coming hours and perhaps days when the names of the others who are still missing are released. The others are said to be Americans and Canadians.
Traditional media highlights the tragic aspect of the story and speaks to those who survived.
The reaction online has been far more interesting than the reports of traditional media outlets. With the news that Lynch was reportedly celebrating the end of his legal troubles in the US, after being found innocent of fraud, and many on board were family, friends and those from his legal team, his yacht sinking has been met with suspicion.
Furthermore, Lynch’s co-defendant (who was also found innocent) was hit by a car and killed on Saturday whilst out for a jog.
The oddness of the story has led to wild conspiracy theories online.

How social media is reacting
Some users online are comparing how right-leaning traditional media has reacted to the news, highlighting the sadness when a yacht full of wealthy people are in danger compared to their harsh coverage of migrant boat sinkings.
Can't help thinking after the news of the Mike Lynch yacht tragedy of all the other poor souls who have died in the Med over the years when their vessels went down. Not business tycoons, but people fleeing for their lives. Aka fellow human beings.

Still can't quite believe that when a boat carrying people seeking a better life sinks and kills 90, it registers as barely a blip on the news cycle

Yet when a yacht carrying billionaires sinks, it's 3-day front page, rolling live ticker news https://t.co/zx60NfSUSn
Others are questioning how both men involved in the legal woes in the US are now either dead or missing and presumed dead.
I’m not much of a conspiracy theorist normally, but Mike Lynch and Stephen Chamberlain both disappearing/dying so close together after being declared innocent over the Autonomy sale definitely got me thinking this morning …

Sounds like someone silenced Mike Lynch.

But why exactly? https://t.co/Ev3UEbpbD1
Mike Lynch and Stephen Chamberlain both dead…the world is so fucked. Both beat an £8b case and both dead in suspicious cases a few weeks later. We laugh when it happens in Russia etc…
